Chapter 1 Notes:

  • Fire Watching was an important job in the war. Doris Colgate and Mabs Taylor were two women among those who took on this role in the village.

  • Sadly, brothers Gordon and Herbert Dabnor of the home guard were killed by a falling bomb. They are buried at St . Botolph's church.

  • Billeting - was one person to each room in a house excluding the bathroom.

  • 200 pupils and 17 staff were evacuated to Chevening School from London. Art teachers from Camberwell School of Art gave lessons at Chipstead Place.

  • Colonel William Duckett was a much loved headteacher of Chevening. He was ranked Major in the home guard but then was reluctantly retired at 65. So he re-enlisted as a private. The Colonel was a keen sportsman and wrote a book about ‘How To Succeed in Athletics’. He was also enlisted as a judge at Olympic Games.
