Chapter 6

‘Let’s hope they’ve tightened up the Jesus nuts!’ thought James to himself as the Chinook banked and battered its way through the air.

Sarah tried to scan the patchwork of fields below. Some snatched glances revealed that hardly anything was on the roads. The whole world looked as if on pause – a sleeping beauty. Sarah had noticed over the weeks how it seemed as if nature had been returning while the people stayed inside. She had seen a Dalmatian pelican over Chipstead Lake and now a skein of geese accompanied the Chinook north. The virus had caused many to reflect. The Earth regaining its breath while people struggled for their own. We had never seen a lockdown like this before – but where was the helicopter taking the children now – their own personal lockdown? And what for? What had they done?

The Chinook tip-toed onto the landing pad, almost as if it dared not touch the surface, and the children were directed out, across the field to metal door, set into the ground. It swung open and the twins descended into a dimly lit corridor. Deeper and deeper it took them until the path was blocked by yet another reinforced door. The steel was rusty and worn as if it had been there for many years but the camera and security pad were clearly new additions.

One of the soldiers gestured for the twins to go inside.

“Er… I think it is locked,” offered Sarah looking blank.

The soldier gestured again.

“Well – worth a try I suppose,” said James pulling out the notes on which they had worked out the number from the photograph.

… 410…
